How much do I have to spend for a monitor AB switch?
My friend would like to run two computers with one monitor.
So far the only switches I have found to do this with have been 115
dollars. Such as http://www.vpi.us/vidsw-pc.html
I thought it might be a lot cheaper than that, because I have Printer
AB switches that are much cheaper.
Thanks

What a quick response for 1 o'clock at night. Usenet and this group |
are great.
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. In fact it looks just like
the printer AB switch.
Although it only says VGA and I guess they need SVGA, right?
I didn't realize the 115 dollar one was automatic, because it has a
little rocker switch on the front, (and I still don't think about
automatic unless someone pushes me.)
Good too. It has one for 27 dollars with the wires built in and
switchable with hotkeys. (The mother will be confused by that, but
can probably learn.)

And now I know the keywords, KVM switch. Thanks again.
My friend got a faster computer, and wants to use it, but his mother
is scared to death of viruses from the internet and lots of other
things. So she wants to stay with the first computer. She won't have
speakers, but I don't think she uses them, and certainly not to write
her psych reports for her job. They don't have the space for
another monitor.
She's under the impression that she has to have two versions of
MSWord, so that she can update old psych reports with the version they
were written in, becuase the city school system is so picky about
format. Her 21 year old son doesn't believe her, that she needs both
versions. I believe anyone when their lips are moving.

The description of this says it controls two PS/2 computers. It will

It just says PS/2 because that was the newest model when they first
made the switch, right? They wouldn't still be selling it if it only
worked with PS/2, right, unless I'm mixed up what PS/2 means.

The term "PS/2" is referring to the connectors. See
the purple and green connectors ? They are just like the
keyboard and mouse connectors on the back of your computer.
The "PS/2 connector" is a 6 pin DIN connector. You can see
the female connectors in this picture, and that would be for
the console port. The console port, is the keyboard and mouse
that will be shared by the two computers.

A PS/2 connector is a serial device. And described in more detail here:

KVMs can handle a variety of I/O standards on computers, but
the prices to handle some of those options will be steep.

Oh, yeah. I knew about PS2 mice, but didn't know it went beyond that
and didn't put 2 and 2 together.
There's getting too much for me to know. Maybe I'll switch from
computers to checkers.
They're on a pretty tight budget. The new computer was win2000 and
they got it as a gift.
Thanks
