First off, I know nothing about computers, so please be patient with me.

I am using a HP Pavilion dv4000 style laptop, which was functioning fine until a few months ago when all of a sudden, my cd drive no longer worked. I checked My Computer, and it was like the drive doesn't even exist. In fact, there is only a C drive that shows up, all of the others are gone.

Help please?

The problem is probably that your CD drive is faulty and/or broken. I recommend that you talk to a pc repair shop and have them take a look at it. If it is indeed broken, they will hook you up with a new one.

There are some advanced ways that you can determine if it is indeed broken yourself if you would like...I will post them at your request.
