I need to replace my Canon S820D. I've been happy with its speed,
quality (mostly) and features but now it's doing weird color balance.
I do about 60% graphics, 40% glossy photos, not a lot of either.

Top candidates are Epson R380 and Canon iP6700D or MP units using same
print engines. Epson quality gets good press but terrible on ink usage/
cost. Canon weakness appears to be text quality. More important, does
the Canon allow user-defined paper size? Non-starter if it doesn't.

I'd appreciate any comments on these two, or other choices in the <
$200 range.

Thanks for any ideas you can offer.

Why do you think it doesnt do text well? The 6700d is a 9600x2400 dpi
printer, which should suffice. Unless maybe you mean on plain copy
paper? You will need better coated ink jet paper, same as any ink jet
printer. The ip6700d is a photo printer with 6 dye-based inks, but the
ip4300 has one pigmented black ink (plus one dye-based black for photos)
which should do text on plain paper, however is only 4 color CMYK for
photos.

Anyway, my Canon 6700d has a Custom paper size..

Custom Paper Size Dialog Box
This dialog box allows you to specify the size (width and height) of the
custom paper.

Units

Selects whether the custom size is defined in mm (millimeters) or
inches.

Paper Size

Specifies the size (width and height) of the custom paper. Specify the
measurement unit by selecting Units.

I have a Canon 6700 and like it very much for color prints. I'm not

concerned about its text capabilities because I also have an HP 1020
laser print, which is usually available for less that $100 in various
sales. My wife and I do a considerable amount of text printing and in
the long run the extra cost of a second printer is soon offset by the
reduced cost of toner cartridges vs inkjet cartridges. Of course, if
space is a significant issue my approach might not work.

I have developed an aversion to any printer that does not have the
print head integrated into the cartridge. I know the Canon has this (I
have a Canon S9000). I think the Epson does too. The problem is that
for whatever reason, if you get an ink clog in the print head you have
a real problem, whereas with the integrated system (aren't most HP
printers integrated head-cartridge type) you just replace the
cartridge- much cheaper than print head cleaning.

I have to use my Canon regularly, I have to use Canon inks, and I fear
getting another expensive clog :-( I will look into the HP large
format printers when it is time for a replacement of the printer.

Don't know exactly what qualities you're looking for but: I have anEpson
R320 with which I've quite pleased. If consummable cost is a concern, you
might want to look at the new Kodak all-in-ones - their consummable cost
is supposed to be about half that of the competition.

Thanks - hadn't thought of Kodak and will investigate. Consumable cost
isn't a show-stopper cause I don't do that much inkjet printing, but
Epson, especially R389, seems to really get hammered on this in
reviews.

Correction: R380
