I'm about to build a new PC and thinking of buying a Dell 2407 LCD monitor.
The card I'm considering for the new rig would be a geforce 8800 GTS, which
I noticed has a HDTV input. I've got a cable modem that I've been splitting
for cable tv as well. Is it possible to use the 8800 GTS as an input to
watch cable tv on this new rig I'm putting together? The p.c. is going to
be used basically for gaming but if I can swing the $$ for the Dell, it
seems to me to be a good monitor to also use for viewing tv, but I've never
hooked TV up to a PC before. Thanks for any responses.

You can hookup directly to the 2407 (bypass PC) and choose signal input from
the 2407 panel... see spec for the 2407

the video card is not a tv capture device
best setup would be a sep tv capture card (i don't recommend biult in to
video card anwyay)
or plug the tv directly into the monitor

I have a dell 2005FPW, or something like that model, i can plug tv into it,
it doesn't handle it very well though, since it's widescreen

Thanks for all the responses. I obviously need to get a capture card
separate from the video card. And I'm rethinking the 2407, given the
comments here. If I watch TV and play games like Quake (the original as
well as subsequent ones), perhaps a widescreen is not the way to go.
I've been reading MaximumPC and listening to its podcasts--apparently
they're very down on 22" monitors that use 6 bit (rather than 8 bit)
color---and recommend either a regular 4:3 aspect ratio 19/20" monitor or at
least a 24" for widescreen. But perhaps the latter is not for me. Thanks
again.

I don't know about Quake, but I run FSX and TV (HD and SD) on a 22"
wide screen which works just fine.

I'm using a Samsung 226BW for photo editing and am quite happy with
it.
