hey,

i have a laptop that i was cleaning. i installed iobit.com's advanced windows care 2.0 and did a cleanup scan then uninstalled all the unnecessary stuff (games, unused programs like quicken, etc.) and restarted the computer. it rebooted fine. i did another restart and now all that happens when it comes on is the background pic is the only thing that shows with the cursor. I can ctrl+alt+delete to get the task manager up, but that's about it. It won't fully restart in safe mode either. it's a 2002 dell inspiron with xp. I'm wondering if I accidentally unstalled and deleted something important.
Two questions:
1. Any idea what's wrong?
2. Any way I can get to the recycling bin through the task manager? I know I can click "new task" and search that way, but I don't know where it is (it's not showing up on desktop).

Any help is appreciated.

Can you start explorer.exe? Click New Task and type in explorer.exe. If that doesn't bring back your taskbar and icons, you have a big problem.

lol... i thought i did have a big problem. i was able to go into windows/system (i think that's what it was) and found a folder that said "restore". i think it was put there early last year when she had it taken to geek squad. it gave me a choice of dates i could choose from, so i restored it to last wednesday's settings. after that, it was smooth sailling. thanks for the input, though. smile
