The only external devices I can get to work on any of my usb ports
are
my printer and an external keypad. I had used thumbdrives and an
external hd with no problem for quite some time, but now they all get
a USB Device Not Recognized error. I've tried plugging all the same
devices into another computer and had total success.

The computer in question is over 4 years old. It is a Sony VAIO.

Suggestions?

You can try this Safe Mode cleanup procedure. The idea is, Windows
re-enumerates the USB devices, which should clean out any cruft.

What Os are you running?

If it's windows 98 or ME, you need to install drivers for these kinds
of devices. If you have this problem on windows 2k or XP.... then
something is not right. (well, more not right)

If that doesn't work try this fix that I have needed to use in the past
after removing drive emulation software.
Registry editing instructions.

Go into device manager and remove any USB devices that have the yellow or red icon next to them. They should be recognized correctly when you reboot.

The devices all work on other PCs, but did you try them all at the same
time on other PCs?

Perhaps this is a power problem - try plugging in the devices individually
on your PC (one at a time). If they all work individually, but not when
plugged in together, then you have devices that are demanding too much
power from the USB ports and you should seek external power for any that
can take it. If your printer is a normal printer with an external power
supply, then it is probably drawing no power, so I would expect that to
work regardless of whatever else is plugged into the USB ports.

In addition to that - I believe the power supply for USB ports works in
pairs - there is 500mV available for ports 0&1. The same for ports 2&3 etc.
So put your printer on a USB pairing with something that requires power and
so on...
