Right now I'm using the software that came with the 3200, but I've
been reading a few reviews of the scanner, and the reviewers are
praising Silverfast for helping to create excellent scans of 35mm
slides which I'm interested in (I know this is an old scanner, but I'm
trying to avoid upgrading at the moment). I tried the Silverfast that
came with the scanner, but it's limited and I'm not sure if I want to
spend the extra money for the upgrade. Thanks...

I use my Epson 3200 regularly to scan medium and large format negatives
in color and b/w. (I don't normally use it to scan 35 mm negatives
because the achievable resolution of about 28-30 lp/mm is too low. I
work under Linux and I've used Vuescan for years and I am very happy
with it. Of course you have to learn to use it, but once you do, you
should be able to do reasonably well. I normally work under Linux, but
when working under Windows, I've tried the version of Silverfast that
came with the scanner. I never liked it much.

give viewscan a try - it is a free download - fully functional, but
watermarks the output image. still, you should be able to see if it
does what you want.
