Everyone with a U5 has. It's exactly the same type of HW. Any brand will
do. Note however that there is a size limit at 137GB for the U5... |

Hi Thommy,
Thanks on your info..
Does the two levels ie Bios (ok prompt) and OS (solaris) have the
require codes to recognise all the PC "IDE hard-disk" (which has a big
inventory) ??
Main reason = there is a big difference in pricing when we purchase
the hard-disk from sun vendor compare to normal PC vendor
Bg concern = when we used the PC hard-disk and it is not 100%
compatible when install on sun ultra 5 , there will be much
headaches.
Can we confidently conclude all types of PC hard-disks (not exceeding
137GB) can be used on the SUN ULTRA 5 ??
Many thanks / Best regards

As Thommy said, any desktop IDE hard drive (i.e. '40 pin connector')
with less than 137GB capacity and made within the last 10 years will
work. One thing to remember is that the drive should be set-up for cable
select. You may run into problems if you're running an old version of
Solaris (7 or earlier).

Yep, just go ahead... And also, there is no BIOS on the U5, there's OBP which is
somewhat different and much more powerful.

Don't think you can get Sun to sell you a disk for a U5 today. They were EOL in
2002 or so...

Yep. Remember that that old/small disks are hard to find nowadays... |

posting on 28 May. Your choices are to update to Solaris 8 (or higher)
or install a SCSI card and use SCSI disks.
My first upgrade to my Ultra 10 was installing an 8GB drive as larger
IDE drives were not supported with Solaris 2.6 or early versions of
Solaris 7. After installing Solaris 8, I had no problem installing a
60GB IDE drive in the Ultra 10.

This is detailed in Casper's FAQ. There are some differences between
specific releases and SPARC vs. x86.

Darren,
Thanks for the pointer to Casper's FAQ, probably of more interest to JC
than me - have Solaris 9 running on my U10 and S10u2 running on my
SB1500. Limitation for internal drives on the SB1500 is due to Sun's
parallel ATA controller - easiest and cheapest way to get larger disks
attached is via an external USB or 1394 drive (currently have a 160GB
and a 250GB external 1394 drive attached to my SB1500). With newer
hardware (e.g. Ultra 25/45) SATA disks are the way to go.
Finding 3.5" IDE drives with less than 137GB capacity is starting to get
tricky, one work-around would be laptop drives. OTOH, it is still
possible to get new disk drives with 4 or 8GB capacity - Seagate makes
them in CF form factor and there are CF to IDE adapters. One of those
drives would be a nice addition to a really low power server such as one
of the ARM9 boards (would be really cool to have a system based on a
single core version of the Niagara processor).
