|
|
I have this WD3200 (300GB?) ATA HD in a USB/FW box which I connected to
my U60 using one of the usb/fw cards off the sun list. I do know this
card works fine with a 20GB 2.5" drive I have in a USB2 case, but I
would like to use something bigger. Now, when I try to format/partition
it, it seems that Sol10 is
having a hard time figuring it out, so I first took it to a Linux box so
to get its specs and then brought it back to the U60 and feed that info.
As you can see below, it seemed to have taken it:
# format -e

Skip the format step. I think low level formatting trough the
USB adapter is neither necessary nor supported.
Did you try the "Auto configure" option before going through the pain
of a manual config?
You should only need to partition/label the disk. |

Well, it seems the auto configure thingie is not able to figure out
what the drive is (this time I connected it to the firewire port):
root@nassau-13>format -e

This is why I went an tried to feed it with HD specs I got from linux:
[root@centos ~]# fdisk /dev/sda
The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 38913.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
(e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)
Command (m for help): p
Disk /dev/sda: 320.0 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 38913 312568641 83 Linux
Command (m for help): q
[root@centos ~]#
Now, that information I fed into it I saved into a format.dat entry;
root@nassau-14>cat /format.dat
#
# New disk/partition type saved on Sun May 27 21:54:58 2007
#
disk_type = "Western Digital Caviar SE WD3200JB 3" \
: ctlr = SCSI : ncyl = 38913 : acyl = 2 : pcyl = 38915 \
: nhead = 255 : nsect = 63 : rpm = 7200
partition = "Western Digital Caviar SE WD3200JB 3" \
: disk = "Western Digital Caviar SE WD3200JB 3" : ctlr = SCSI \
: 0 = 0, 273105 : 1 = 17, 273105 : 2 = 0, 625137345 \
: 6 = 34, 624591135
root@nassau-15>
When I entered that it was able to provide a default partition table, as
seen in my previous post, but was not able to do much with it.

The format.dat question only makes sense if I have something to give
it. I tried running it in a Linux box, to get what it thinks is the
specs for the disk,
[root@centos ~]# fdisk /dev/sda
The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 38913.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
(e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)
Command (m for help): p
Disk /dev/sda: 320.0 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 38913 312568641 83 Linux
Command (m for help): q
[root@centos ~]#
and then entered it and let it create a format.dat entry:
#
# New disk/partition type saved on Sun May 27 21:54:58 2007
#
disk_type = "Western Digital Caviar SE WD3200JB 3" \
: ctlr = SCSI : ncyl = 38913 : acyl = 2 : pcyl = 38915 \
: nhead = 255 : nsect = 63 : rpm = 7200
partition = "Western Digital Caviar SE WD3200JB 3" \
: disk = "Western Digital Caviar SE WD3200JB 3" : ctlr = SCSI
\
: 0 = 0, 273105 : 1 = 17, 273105 : 2 = 0, 625137345 \
: 6 = 34, 624591135
But I think it is not right. Reason is that it does not net me save
the label info. Trying to say "yes" for the generic scsi-2 option does
not take me anywhere:
Specify disk type (enter its number): 0
Auto configuration via format.dat[no]?
Auto configuration via generic SCSI-2[no]? yes
