|
|
Hello. I have a problem with my Tecra 8100. I had recently updated the
OS from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 Professional. I had installed all
of the necessary updates for the laptop, and then attempted to upgrade
the BIOS. Everything looked like it went well (laptop was attached to
wall with AC adapter), and the system restarted with out a hitch. When
it restarted, I didn't see a BIOS screen, so I decided to wait. After
a few moments, the computer reset itself again, and the BIOS screen
(Toshiba logo) didn't appear. After hours of trying to get it to work,
I noticed that pressing F12 before turning it on brought up the BIOS
update screen. Unfortunately, I don't have a FDD that can connect to
this laptop. Here are my questions:
1.) Is there a way to bring the laptop back up without going through
another BIOS update?
2.) Is the F12 function separate from the BIOS?
3.) I attached an external keyboard to the laptop, and it did power
up, with the usual 3 status lights lighting up. Does this indicate
that there isn't a BIOS upgrade failure?
4.) I have an FDD from a Toshiba Satelite T2250CDS (one of their older
models). Will this FDD work with the Tecra 8100?
5.) Are there any other ways that the Tecra 8100 BIOS restore program
can read from a FDD?
6.) Are there any modifications to allow a desktop floppy drive to be
connected to this laptop? |

I also meant to say that the screen doesn't show up either. The screen
only works when I press F12 to bring up the BIOS update program. Do
you think that the program will be able to read from the HDD? I
disconnected the HDD, and still nothing.
Well, if nothing works, I guess I might have to search on EBay for a
Tecra 8100 floppy drive... |

Another question: do you think that the computer would be able to read
from a PCMCIA floppy drive? |

Toshiba laptops that had external floppy drives used one of two
connectors. Basically, if the connector fits, the external floppy drive
will work.
You can do a bios update from the hard drive. Put the files in the root
and it will work fine. It's not usually done, but it will work (if the
computer supports a bootable CD, that would work as well ... make the CD
on another machine from a floppy image).
BE SURE THAT YOU HAVE THE RIGHT BIOS. The surest way to kill a laptop
is to do a bios update with the wrong bios.
You cannot easily modify a desktop floppy for use with the Toshiba
laptops (actually, you could in theory, it's just a cable/connector
issue, but it's a huge cable/connector issue).
Some of the newer machines will FULLY accept a USB floppy, even for
booting and bios updates, but yours is probably a number of years too
old to support this.

What happens when use the bios setup to reset everything to default? |
My limited experience with toshibas suggests that if the floppy fits the
plug, it probably works. YMMV.
Can you borrow a USB Floppy?
Try booting a live linux cd. If that works, your bios might be ok.
Pull the hard drive and see what happens.
I've seen weird problems with the bios mis-recognizing the number of
sectors on the hard drive by one. Drives formatted in a desktop
won't run in the laptop. Never seen a bios upgrade give this problem,
but if they fixed the "off by one" problem in the bios, it might have
messed up..just grabbing at straws here.

IT WORKED!
Some coincidence this happened two days apart!
However, I have a lot of screws in excess after assembling the Notebook
again ;-)
(See attached picture to ensure I'm not pulling your leg about having
the Notebook and floppy :-) )

Sure... How do we do this - I don't feel much for sharing it here :-)
What if I wrote you on email?
