How can I enter dates in Word 2003 so that they stay as they are? Whenever I
make a radical change to a document -- changing it from portrait to
landscape layout, for example -- the dates all revert to today's date. How
can I stop them updating like this? Is there another way of entering dates
than from the formatting toolbar?

What you've been entering are date fields. These resolve to the current date
when updated (by selecting the date and pressing F9, for example).

You can prevent them from changing by converting them into normal text (this
is called unlinking). Click on the date and press Ctrl+Shift+F9.

Another way to insert dates is to choose Insert - Date and Time, select the
desired format, remove the check next to Update automatically, and then
click OK. This inserts static text as your date instead of inserting a date
field.

Note that other date fields are available, such as createdate, savedate,
and printdate, but I suspect that what you really want is plain old fashion
text that never changes.

This is pretty basic -- maybe you just haven't thought of it. When you enter
the date using the Insert menu, uncheck the box for automatically updating
the date. The original date should then remain.
