How does the new midrange DEX10 cards (8600GTS) compare performancevise
versus similary priced DX9 cards? (in the latest dx9 games of course). Not
caring about vista and dx10 much as there will prolly be another gen cards
out before I try bother with that, would it be best performance buying the
8600GTS or one of the dx9 cards?

The 8600GTS is roughly on par with a 7900GS/GT in DX9. The new shader |
unit architecture seems to help significantly for a lower end part where
they are executed in a different fashion from the 8800's and have very
high clock speeds. |

In Battlefield 2 with 4x FSAA 1600x1200 the 7950GT has 78.4 FPS, the
8600GS 52.4 FPS.

the 8600GS 39.3 FPS @ 1600x1200 again.
The 7950GT beats the 8600GS in many applications in many conditions you
are likely to have your PC configured for. The 8800GS (320/640) is the
next step up from the 7950GT, not the 8600GS.
I can not recommend the 8800GS 320M version over the 512M version of the
7950GT, since Oblivion frequently uses 490M+ of video ram, You have to
go to the 640M version if you are looking to run Oblivion with mods,
texture replacements, etc. |

Note the question said *earlier* card, not *former* card. I interpret
"earlier card" as chronologically earlier, i.e. the 7950GT. The comparison
favors the 7950GT. I think you misunderstood my answer.

I'm glad I did, since I thought you generally had a clue to these
things. <waves hands around the group casually>.
That said, the 8600GS is a pooch kick and I don't see it as having a
similar shelf life as the other earlier GS series. (There's that word
again.) |

Did some research after my OP and realised that the performance of the card
wasn't exactly showstopping, but then I realised that the price difference
from it to the cheapest 8800GTS wasn't that big, clearly a better option
(and almost twice the performance). |

I am just curious: What happens when one wants to play this game with a card
which has only 256 MB of RAM? Or if one wants to use the mods, texture
replacements, etc. you added on a card which has 512 MB? Will it refuse to
play or will it be slow as a snail? I don't have that game but I have seen
some beautifull screenshots of it and I am considering buying a 7950 with
512 MB, perhaps afterwards I may like to buy that game. For the moment
however, I am, like I said before, just curious.
