My daughter's computer uses an ASUS A8V motherboard and W2K SP4. It was
using a Venice 3000, but this morhing I finally got around to installing
the 3800X2. The motherboard detected the new CPU OK. The O/S didn't
seem to notice any difference. Everything is working. System
Properties reports a Dual Core running at 2mhz. But the task manager
only shows one CPU Usage window.
Is the system utilizing the dual core processor or does it still only
think there's one there?
Is there anything I can do short of reloading O/S that will help?

What does "Device Manager" and its "Computer" entry report
for the HAL type of the software install ?
For example, I am running Win2K, I have a Hyperthreaded Intel P4
processor, my "Computer" entry shows "ACPI Multiprocessor PC", and
my Task Manager has two CPU Usage charts.
Certain HAL changes are easier than others. "Standard PC" is pretty
deadly. But you probably weren't running that anyway. The difference
between "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" and "ACPI Multiprocessor PC" should not
be nearly as big.
This is an example I found, by searching for "hal change" "ACPI Multiprocessor":

Pretty sure yu have to re-install to get the correct HAL.
You can re-install W2k over itself without losing al;l of your settings and
programs,but yopu will have to re-install service packs and possibly DirectX
..
