Has anyone used a ULTRA power supply? If so, are they good ones? They
don't seem to be priced like Antec, etc., but the company brags up it's
technology like the Antecs, etc.
Just wondering,

I believe that one gets what one pays for. Antec is the creme de la creme
of power supplies; but you have to pay for the parts quality.

May be ok but have you
ever looked or used a Power Cooling and Supply unit. I think many use
em as a sort of high standard comparison. Pricey, but SOLID where it's
needed. |

I will second that. I would put them ahead of Antec. Just look at the
reviews.

Antec don't make their PSUs - they specify them.
Power & Cooling don't make their PSUs - they specify them.
That's the key bit - what segment is the PSU orientated for?
Such PSU production is farmed out to key manufacturers, it
matters more the brand & intended segment quality they build for.
Sparkle/FSP/SPI are OEM to Compaq & others. They do a good
PSU generally - very heavy (large hi-pots), good heatsinks, big caps,
generally don't skimp on components like filters on front-end, coils etc.
Basically buy a good quality PSU avoiding the frills that don't matter,
flashing lights & such aren't really doing much - overly big isn't either.
Antec, Sparkle and several others are good quality.
You don't have to spend a lot - ie, buy a huge wattage PSU:
o P4-3.06 is 75W at 100% load
o hot graphics is 55W at 100% load
o HD, Chipset, Ram are 50W at 100% load
Hence the avg top-end PC is still <200W, and many are <150W avg.
So you don't need much more than a 300-350W PSU for 2:1 safety factor.
Remember even really huge dual-CPU servers with big 8-10 drive RAID
arrays, multiple RAID cards, extra SCSI card for tape, DLT tape brick,
lots of ram and continuous 100% load still often come with <450-550W.
So better to buy a quality 300-350W unit, than a lesser 500-550W unit.

I don't care who makes my PSU as long as I'm getting quality for my |
nearly $200. When I hang 6 hard drives on and see the 12V line the
same as when 1 is on I like seeing NOT a 1/10 volt drop on my DVM.
I also purchased for the future power sucking gee wiz gaget I install.
I often wonder how many problems are created as a result of el cheapo
PSUs, especially the flakey here now and gone later ones. |

When PSUs are loaded - quality matters, some PSUs can not
even deliver their maximum rating without problems or failure.
