My Daughter had an old (AT version) Gateway running Win98 which had a Mustek
MFC-600S SCSI scanner connected. I am giving her a later model Gateway (ATX
running WinXP) and cannot for the life of me get it to connect. Can anyone
help me?

That particular scanner connects via a Mustek special purpose SCSI card for
which I cannot find drivers in this country. I Googled and did find a
supposed "upgrade" at a German site which I downloaded but cannot figure out
how to install it. I cannot find any printed documentation on this upgrade
and unfortunately, the original (Win98) documentation has disappeared.

The SCSI card has 3 toggle switches used to set a 3 digit number in the
series 280, 290, 300, 310,,330, 340, 348, 350 which I remember setting to
280 but it's been so long I forget what was being set and it's signifigance.
The only printing on the card attributed it to "Must. Systems" (no help
there that I can find - too old).

Am I lucky enough that someone out there has one of these and perhaps still
has the installation instructions or can give me some clues?

The Mustek scanner has a true SCSI interface, so you can use another SCSI card
fully supported by Windows XP. I recommend one of the Adaptec 2900-series with
either a 25-pin SCSI or a 50-pin miniSCSI connector on the back. What kind of
connector is on the computer end of the SCSI cable you have? I will guess
25-pin.

The SCSI chip on your "Mustek" SCSI card is a product of a Colorado hardware
design house that went from NCR to AT&T (or vice versa) to LSI to I don't know
where. Modern drivers got lost along the way.

I can probably scare up a working Adaptec 2900-series card in my collection of
hardware curiosities. If you'd like to buy one, contact me offline and tell me
the cable interface you need. These older SCSI scanners are awfully sturdy and
they scan very well. The Mustek is worth continued use. I use an HP SCSI
scanner from the same era with an Adaptec 2940 that also has other odd devices
hitched to it, and there is really no need to get something more modern... Ben
