Anyone who knows if it is possible (supported aside) to attach a 3511
SATA JBOD (i.e. the one without HW-RAID) to a host directly? Or are
there other solutions for getting "cheap" FC attached disk arrays for
ZFS?

It works.

Sun 2500. dnf & promise make FC->SATA JBODs, but they are single
controller.

Must it be FC? Now that Sun is releasing their own SAS card, they
have the SAS driver kinks worked out. (Probably you'll have to wait
until U4 for it?) If you can do SAS you can save a bundle.

Well, I happen to have two V480 with 2 SG-XPCI2FC-EM2 each.
Wanted to test out ZFS in something a little heavy...

Yeah but if you don't *need* FC, then even throwing away those
controllers will save you money. As for zfs, SAS or FC won't make too
much difference. SAS does 3Gb/s, cheaply, and you can attach lots and
lots of drives. 4Gb FC is still very expensive right now.

That said, I have a pair of 4Gb FC controllers and will ultimately go
that route, I'm sure. SAS on Solaris is too new for my tastes. Let
me know if you're gonna junk those controllers. :-)

Well, it's only that I have those V480's and the FC cards...
But I can sell all of it I suppose, didn't give anything special for them...

Interested? I have two identical as below...

(buy just the expansion shelf)

Sorry, I can't find any others! I'd swear I've seen these. No one
is selling FC->SATA JBODs, you have to look for "expansion shelves"
or similar.

Sure, but my point is that even with the FC cards being free, you will
save money with SAS because even though you have to buy the cards
instead of re-using your existing FC cards, the array itself is a lot
cheaper than an FC array. And it's easy to find a SAS JBOD.
