I found an Alienware M9700 in the dumpster behind work a couple of days ago.
The screen is broken and the battery doesn't have enough juice to boot the
computer, so hooking it up to my monitor does no good. I called my local
sheriff's department, and no laptops have been reported stolen. What should
I do? Replacing the screen will be expensive, and I don't want to sell this
thing without seeing what's on the hard drive and possibly wiping it(in case
someone was DUMB enough to just throw out a computer without doing so).

Buy a cheap power adapter off ebay and see if it will boot up

That looks like a common size power jack. You might want to see if
your local radio shack (or equivalent) has a universal power adapter.

Speaking from experience in the refurbishing business, if it belonged
to a home user, and the hard drive is present, odds are in the 90%
range that the hard drive has NOT been wiped. Corporations, who should
know better, still leave the drive unwiped most of the time.

Alienware is not usually a brand owned by corporations.

To wipe a drive in place, I use this tool:

Ammonium nitrate is not an explosive. When combined with a

hydrocarbon like oil in the right proportions, the result is
ANFO (Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil) which *is* explosive.

Do NOT wipe the drive.

Laptops almost always have a licensed operating system and maybe other
licensed software that has value.

It's not YOUR responsibility to protect someone else's data. Having
said that, the nice thing to do would be to clear their private data...
but don't WIPE the drive until you have determined what's on it,
extracted valid license keys, software and anything else useful.

Is the power supply voltage/current printed on the bottom?
If so, hook it to a bench supply to see if it works. Alienware
is rare enough that you're not likely to trip over a proper power
brick at a rational price. And no price is rational until you determine
that the machine works.
Ditto for the screen. Laptops are getting cheap and replacement screens
are expensive. 'Bout the only way to make this feasible is to find
another one with a good screen and make one good out of two bad.
If the screen's not too bad, it might be useful as is.
I have a laptop with a cracked screen...but there's enough of it
working that I can watch a DVD on it...

You must live in a small town if NO laptops have been stolen ;-)

Au contraire. Ammonium Nitrate is an explosive. It is often used for some
types of quarry work. It does require some sort of a gayne (often dynamite
or gelegnite) to set it off properly.
