Can anyone offer some advice on the best way to go about replacing a
standard A8V with the XE model?? I'm switching boards and replacing the AGP
card with a PCI-E(16) card. I swapped everythng out correctly but for some
reason when Windows is loading it bombs and reboots, even when attempting
safe mode. It will start loading drivers and then re-boot. I REALLY do not
want to do another install of XP. Do I need to un-install the video drivers
and possibly the IDE drivers before shutting down to make the switch??
Anyone help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to undertake a repair installation
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
then install mobo specific, and other drivers. NB do NOT use winupdate for
drivers

If you are using the sata controler as your primary boot disk it may be that
you need to F6 early in the repair install process to install sata/raid
drivers from floppy (even if you are not using raid)
The FAQ's for your mobo should detail whether this is required

| Quote: | Thanks Old Man for the link. It gives me more info on slipstreaming and
repair installing. The only problem is that in the first warning it
discusses not being able to boot into XP and that is something I can't do,
even in safe mode. I think my problem lies in removing the ATI drivers
prior
to replacing the board. But if all else fails then I can slipstream the
SATA
drivers and re-install XP.
Thanks again for the help,
Anthony

The SATA is the boot drive. The disk I am using is slipstreamed with the
drivers, though I need to check and see what RAID drivers are needed for
this board. The older A8V uses the viasraid.sys drivers, I think. I guess
I'm gonna have to do a complete re-install this weekend. At least it's a
long weekend. Thanks again for the help

Thanks Rob for the help. I was afraid it would come to a re-install. I just
did this 3 weeks ago. I guess I can try and use the file and settings
transfer wizard and possibly cut some time off all of the application
installations. And maybe a system state back-up as well. <sigh> Thanks
again for the info

You're welcome, Anthony. I've monitored multiple news groups for years,
and when anyone changes the MB and has XP OS, in all but a few cases,
this is what's happened and the reinstall is required. I understand
your reluctance, as I have been there before as well. ;-)
I long for the days when Win98SE was out. You could change anything you
want and the OS will just find drivers, or ask for them, and go merrily
on it's way.
Too bad XP is not the same. Try to have a nice weekend and holiday,
despite the extra work.
Regards,
Rob |
