Hello,
my PC has a CUBX-E motherboard and I"m going to need a new hard drive
soon. I was told that the CUBX-E may not be able to handle too much
hard drive capacity, but I can't find any information relating to
this.

Can anyone direct me to information relating to the maximum hard drive
capacity the CUBX-E can handle?

many thanks,
Richard

sonstige CU... - Serie Aktuelle Final bis einschl. 128 GB

bis einschl. = bis einschließlich ?

other CU... - Serie Aktuelle Final to inclusively 128 GB

Note that there are a couple ways to count bytes. You can use binary
or decimal. The above table is 128GB binary, equal to 137,438,953,472
bytes. A disk manufacturer would call that "137.4 GB", i.e. decimal.

So with a recent BIOS, a 120GB disk manufacturer size should be safe.
A 160GB drive would be too big.

The limit is 28 bit sector addressing, where a sector is 512 bytes or 1/2 KB.

This document was presumably part of the standards work for handling
larger disks (than "128") and mentions the max size allowed by 28 bit
addressing. It also shows the method for how they pump a 48 bit
address into the hardware. The same number of register addresses
are used, but the registers are loaded twice.

Seems those had the on board promise controller chip for ATA 66 or
100 if I recall in addition to the BX ata33 controllers. The bios
updates would be a *** though I bet. You might check your manual
or google to see if you can turn off the on board promise chip in
your bios and use a PCI ata100/133 controller card. I think
sometimes you can't because of conflicts.

You really really can buy a good cheap socket 754 motherboard, ram,
and cpu for next to nothing these days:

Amd 2.2ghz Cpu is $36, gforce 6100 motherboard with video is $49,
ram with rebate is under $60 for a gig stick. newegg.com
