|
|
I am a certified PC technician, and a client has just upgraded from a
Presario 5190 to SR5030nx. She used preinstalled MS-Works on the old
systen and wanted to trasfer her Works files to the new system. But she
is finding that the old files will not open in preinstalled Works on the
new system.
I think the problem is that the file filters needed to open files from
the old Works are not installed on her new system, because it is a
"Typical" install of Works, and when I talked to Compaq on the phone
they told me that there is "no way" to acquire a setup disk for Works to
do a full install that would activate the necessary file filters. I
next consulted Microsoft, and they said they would be *delighted* to
tell me what to do to solve this problem -- for $75.00.
Is there any Compaq user here who has encountered this issue with
preinstalled Works and transferring old files over, and can tell me how
you resolved it?
Thanks ahead. |

Dave,
What do you mean by "file filters". What type files ?
It just so happens that I've been cleaning up and I know I have a Works
CD here somewhere ( it is probably Win98 era) - what would you need off
it ? Would version matter ? i.e. if my CD is older would it work for
you ?
I just bought a new HP laptop and it has Works too. I probably have her
version. I have never used it - always MS Office but haven't tweaked my
laptop yet - what is she trying ?
Do her old/new files have same extension ? Are there lots of files or
just a few ?
Does she have MS Office ? Is her old PC there still - can she save files
as some common platform ? ( like csv or RTF etc) or copy the folder and
play a bit with copy ? What if just rename old ext to the new version
name ( like if old Works used "xy1" and new uses " xy2", rename to xy2)
and try it ?
