Looks like I'm having some problems with my old (3.5 years old) Asus
motherboard. It's time to upgrade. I thought I would upgrade to a newer
Intel-based board.

I don't need blinding speed or anything special. 98% of my use is internet,
email and some video websites (google video, utube).

What would you recommend for a low-cost Asus board, CPU and memory? I'm
looking for the best low-cost, price-point value I can find. Sure need to
save as much as possible.....

What about getting a P5B, A Core2Duo E4300 with a set of 2x512MB DDR-2
PC6400 RAM?
The E4300 can be overclocked at least 50% and would mean good value. If
you're not overclocking by more, the retail fan/heatsink will probably
suffice.
Advanced SATA features like NCQ are not supported, but from what I hear you
will not miss it.
Cheaper boards with i945 chipset or with VIA chipset are available, but I
wouldn't bother.

About $60 or so; you may be able to do better locally because of the
cost of shipping a case and PSU.

Equivalent Intel system?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115014

$139. for CPU.

Most of the older generation socket 775 CPUs are now out of stock:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2%2050001157%2040000343%201051707842%201302820275&bop=And&Order=PRICE&CompareItemList=N82E16819116249%2E0%2CN82E16819115015%2E0%2CN82E16819115014%2E0

A good Intel motherboard, approximately the same at $65 or so:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2%2050001157%2040000343%201051707842%201302820275&bop=And&Order=PRICE&CompareItemList=N82E16819116249%2E0%2CN82E16819115015%2E0%2CN82E16819115014%2E0

The other parts will be the same, so, you save about $139-79 = $60 going
with AM2.

Also: I do like the stock CPU fan and attachment for it for AM2: the
four pronged Intel socket 775 stock cooler is a pain, IMHO.

You can upgrade video/hard drive later; 2GB of memory should be good
for a while.

Have A look at this combo its not a asus board but since you want to
save as much as possible

http://promotions.newegg.com/AMD/939pin/index.html?CMP=EMC-IGNEFL052207&ATT=AMDFox-Combo

and you will need a cooler for the CPU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185042

and maybe some ram if the ram you got is not DDR 400

$139. for CPU.

Most of the older generation socket 775 CPUs are now out of stock:

A good Intel motherboard, approximately the same at $65 or so:

The other parts will be the same, so, you save about $139-79 = $60 going
with AM2.

Also: I do like the stock CPU fan and attachment for it for AM2: the
four pronged Intel socket 775 stock cooler is a pain, IMHO.

You can upgrade video/hard drive later; 2GB of memory should be good for
a while.

Joe101 here joining this string,

B.C. I like your picks. I'm thinking of building a similar system. I have
another unused Windows XP license that I would like to use with the dual
core Athlon 64 X2, then eventually going to Vista (SE?). My question
is.... will XP Pro work? And will it take advantage of the dual cores?

And yet another question if you are familiar with multiple monitors. I now
use 2 monitors on an AGP and PCI card. Do you think the on board D-sub
and DVI would drive dual monitors?
