Hello,

I have a M2N MB based system that I built last September, 2006. I don't
think it's the MB or hardware but I'm not sure. I don't believe the events
are related but I installed Vista, then went back to XP. When I had Vista
and then putting XP back on my system I have a peculiar problem powering on
the computer. It starts up, I get the single beep at POST verifying we're
good to go, and then the machine completely shuts down. If I hit the power
button again it comes up just fine; single beep at POST. This happens each
time I power the computer on after doing a graceful shut-down. If I restart
the machine the problem doesn't occur. Only when I need to hit the power
button to turn it on does this occur.

There are two causes that come to mind. I have a rather old APC 420 UPS
however the battery is good as it'll power the system for about 5mins but it
is old, at least 12 years old. I'm wondering if it could be a faulty power
supply. I purchased a PC Power & Cooling 650w power supply when I built the
system back in September. I've always had great success with PC P&C power
supplies and they are known for their quality but I'm wondering if this
could be the issue.

Other than this power up issue the machine runs flawlessly. Single beep at
POST and XP has no errors at all in the Application or System logs.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.
Phil

Think about what you're saying . Originally had XP loaded no issues.

then you went to Vista and then back to XP. That's when your problems
began. 99% probability this has NOTHING to do with the hardware.
Reinstall XP not repair XP and also when you're asked if you want to do
a quick format answer no and do the full format. Your system will run as
before.

Good Luck

I did flash the BIOS and I kept the old bios version. I'll do a regresion on
the BIOS and see if that helps. Thanks for the advice!

Did you maybe maybe flash the bios for Vista and that's when the problem
started?
