I have a computer that a friend let me have and when i turn the computer and monitor on the monitor comes on with a black screen and in the middle the settings are up for when u want to adjust the monitor, make it bigger, color and things like that but i can't get it to go away and the desktop never comes up and when i turn off the computer the monitor goes off, what is wrong, i really need this computer to work!!!

The monitor is:
1) Not plugged into the computer (if you think it is, unplug and plug back in)
2) Plugged in incorrectly to the computer (unplug and try again)
3) The graphics card in your friend's computers is shot and s/he needs a new one.

There are a couple of other less common things that could be wrong, but check through that list first.
