|

Hi to all,
I am considering buying this card as my last AGP buy. It seems to be a very
good one and the price is reasonable. However, when I see pictures of this
card, it only has 2 DVI-outputs. I know from an old ATI-card that there are
adapters from DVI to the old-fashioned analog VGA but I do not know whether
these things are universal or that they are more like the USB-PS/2-mouse
adapters from Logitech, which do not work on any mouse but only on certain
models. I have searched thoroughly but I can't find whether such an adapter
comes with this specific card (not on the XFX site nor on shop's sites).
Funny thing is that RAMDAC's are mentioned in the spec's and afaik these
would not be necessary if the only output would be digital, so logically
analog signals must exist on this card.
I do however own an old-fashioned analogous 19" monitor which I do not want
to part with. So I hope someone can enligthen me on the question whether
this card would be a good buy for me.
Any other comments on this buy (perhaps there is a better choice for AGP?)
are welcome as well!
Have a nice sunday.
Yours sincerely,
Rene |

AFAIK, XFX is a maker of Nvidia cards. The PV-T71A-YDF3 is a 7950GT AGP.
NCIX fancies themselves a bit like Newegg, and they have provided
thumbnail pictures. There is one DVI-I to VGA dongle provided in the box.
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=23579&vpn=PVT71AYDF3&manufacture=XFX
DVI-I = DVI-D + VGA signals. The dongle just routes the VGA
related signals, to the correct pins on the 15 pin VGA end.
The remaining digital signals are unused. So the dongle doesn't
do anything magic (no active conversion).
Note that most video cards, when you see the outline of the DVI
connector, chances are the connector is DVI-I. But there are
some low end cards, for reasons that only the manufacturer
understands, the DVI connector has no analog signals on it.
It is a DVI-D. Unless you get to view the faceplate of the card,
and can check for the presence of the necessary analog signal pins,
you might not notice that they used a DVI-D, rather than a
DVI-I. Such low end cards apparently lack the ability to
do a unique dual display. But your 7950GT is far enough from being
a cheap card, that it is not likely to happen to that card.
You can see in the picture of the five connectors in this article,
that the DVI-I connectors have the analog signals on the left.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvi
This closeup picture (a reversed view), shows the four signals
"on the cross", plus the pin 8 signal, give the necessary RGBHV
(red,green,blue,horizontal_sync,vertical_sync) for VGA. It is the
job of the dongle, to route those signals to the 15 pin connector.
In addition, they would need things like DDC_clock, DDC_data, and
friends, to allow the monitor characteristics to be read via the
serial bus.

The card comes with 2 DVI-I to VGA adapters. There are 3 different DVI
types (all have the same form factor) DVI-D = digital only (usually on
the monitor side), DVI-A = analog only (exists as part of the standard
but is not used), and DVI-I = both digital and analog (on most video
cards). There are 3 rows of 8 pins (24 total - contains both digital
and VGA sync signals) and a 'blade' (ground) with 2 pins on either
side (4 total - RGB analog signals). A normal DVI-D connector will not
have those 4 pins near the 'blade'.
