Hello, I like photography but I don't really know too much about the
hardware available. I have a Sony Alpha and I have a hunch my dad is
going to offer me a new telescopic lens. The one I have is a Sony
75-300 and my dad has been talking with me about a Sigma 50-500. This
sounds good because 500 is better than 300 and 50 sounds better than
75 for closer shots (I mostly shoot sporting events so I need to adapt
quickly as players move in my direction).

Anyway, I assume Sigma lenses are compatible with my Sony Alpha? My
dad gets very excited and doesn't ask too many questions to the seller
and I want to make sure he isn't blowing a ton of money on a non-
compatible piece of hardware.

Second, considering all the wide selection of lenses available I'm a
bit lost, assuming he's going to offer me a Sigma 50-500 are there
several Sigmas 50-500 to choose from or knowing this info can somebody
kindly tell me which is the reference or name of this particular lense
so I can learn more about it on the net?

Sorry about my poor English. Many thanks.

Andre, I use the Sigma 50-500 on a Canon 1DM2N whenever I need the extra
reach it offers. It's a nice lens in many ways but it has its limitations -
and shooting action sports is one of them I'm afraid. It's quite slow to
achieve and lock focus on fast moving subjects (largely due to its limited
aperture at longer focal lengths). I mainly use it for slow-moving or
stationary subjects, and I have had some nice results. You may want to
consider a shorter lens with a wider aperture through the range for your
needs. I use a Canon 70-200mm f2.8L, and try to compensate for the lack of
reach by picking my shooting position more carefully :-) Also, I'd advise
against being attracted to the Sigma by its HUGE range - 50mm all the way up
to 500mm is really too much to expect from any single lens.
Good Luck
