Hi,
Can I boot from a pen drive on the NF7-S ver 2.0?
The bootable device do not show a selection for a USB device.
Is there any setting that make it work(boot from a pen drive)?

The manual says you can from removable devices.
I am using BIOS release 2.7, |
11/22/2004-nVidia-nForce-6A61BA1BC-27
and the Advance BIOS screen is different from the manual
BIOS screen. There is no "removable devices priority"
in ver 2.7 instead there are
First Boot Device {List of devices}
Second Boot Device
Third Boot Device
Boot Other Device (Enable/Disable)
List of Devices: { Floppy, LS120, HDD-0,SCSI,CDROM, HDD-1,
HDD-2, HDD-3,ZIP100, LAN, Serial ATA, Disabled }
I have tried LS120, ZIP100, SCSI and enabled "Boot Other Device"
but all did not work.
I have a Kingston 512MB USB 2.0 DataTraveller pen drive
which I tried to make bootable using Bart's mkbt.exe and
boot files from a winXP created ms-dos startup diskette.
Boot files=bootsect.bin, io.sys, msdos.sys,command.com.
The label on the pendrive show DTI/512 05279-036.A00LF.
Anyone has any success on making this pen drive bootable?

Most BIOSes seem to recognize USB sticks as hard drives. The only way to
boot from one that I have found is to start the computer with the USB
attached and get into the BIOS to change the hard drive priority to set the
USB stick as the first. Obviously not a convenient method if you need to
boot from USB on a regular basis. Other brands of motherboards with a
Function Key to bring up a Boot Menu make this far easier. |

before powering up. Tried the likely boot devices(LS120, LSZIP,SCSI)
since there is no "USB device" option. Also enable boot other devices
but no go. Have email "contact-us" Abit & Kingston(DataTraveler 512MB)
asking whether the mobo/pen drive is bootable.

The BIOS of your 7S v2 is obviously even more ancient than that of my 7S2G
and lacking the setting for Hard disk boot priority. Since USB sticks are
usually recognized as Hard drives I'd be tempted to try setting the first
boot device to HDD-1 assuming you only have the one HD (HDD-0), adjust
according to the number of HD you have. |

I got a reply from Kingston:
" We are sorry to inform you all Kingston usb drives do not support bootable
function, including your DTI/512. It only can be used for a normal usb
storage memory card."
I wonder how true the above is.
Anyone got ANY Kingston usb pen drives to BOOT?
Abit autoreply was just an acknowledgment of receipt.
Still waiting for their "technical" reply.

Got Abit's tech. reply:
"Thanks for your mail.
About this problem,because the NF7 mainboard didn't support
boot from USB flashdisk function, so it didn't boot USB device."
So both my mobo & pen drive do not support bootable USB device.

I can see where the bios wouldn't support it, but I can't see how a drive
couldn't support it. It's just another storage device. HD drives aren't
bootable either without being partitioned, formatted and a compatable OS
installed to them. With a proper boot loader it should be possibly to boot
from any storage device on a system as long as the bootloader can run
regardless of bios support for it. The problem is finding a bootloader
that supports it, and an OS that will support the drive also. this should
show you how to do it.

I was doubful about Kingston's reply anyway.
I need to find a motherboard which does support bootable USB
pen drive and try booting from it.

I manage to boot from the Kingston pen drive using a
KT6 Delta( MSI-6590 v2.0) mobo.
However, it only boots reliably at FSB=133MHz
At 166MHz, it reads from the pen drive partially then hung
in the DOS screen.
At 200MHz it it unable to read from the pen drive.
So it is possible to make a Kingston pen drive bootable.
Now, Is there a hacked Abit BIOS for the NF7-S v2.0
which can boot from a USB device?
