I have been a member of flickr for a while and it has been a great
place to show my photos to family and friends but the groups there
leave a lot to be desired.

I am a member of a great rating group but the admins have been on a
banning spree of late.

I have looked at pbase and smuggmugg are there any free ones that are
user friendly?

Flickr is fine but I can't see a reason in paying $30 a year to be
part of a group that is run my power hungry people that can't make it
in the real world. Seems it is easier to block or ban someone than
listen to their point of view.

Sorry, I did mean to mention they are amateur photos in the title.

Flicker can be a real mess & I agree pbase is cleaner but I think if you
pay, you get a little more control & features. Here's a friend's flicker
site which he's finally got looking pretty nice:

I get a black page with "Take a Tour" and "create yourself a free
account" in blue at the top.

Wow. That's more than me. I only get a black page with nothing on the top.
However, I think it does want to load some Flash or something.

$30/year is cheap. Go for it. I'd do pbase if you aren't into the social
thing.

Often times you get what you pay for. Have you considered one of the
low cost web hosts available now? I host a personal web site with
netfirms.com (www.rcarter.net). Cost is $5/month and I can put up
pictures, whatever.

That's nearly 500% more than I pay Pbase per month...

Fine. Point is that 'free' hosting often winds up being worth what
you pay for it. There are reasons why commercial entities exist.

Pbase isn't free...so I'm not sure what you're referring to.
Of course Pbase is limited to images, where other hosting can contain
comprehensive web-sites... Just not sure what you're referring to...

Per Adrian Boliston:
Quote:
One trouble I have found with flickr is the 500x500 pixel limit for regular
browsing, wheras pbase allows up to 800x800,

That doesn't sound right to me. Maybe there's a default size
somewhere around there, but my pics are all available in several
increments up to and including original size.

I sent some money to the fine folks at "Nikonians"...once. Their
servers were constantly down and extremely slow... After a couple of
weeks of frustration, I asked to remove my gallery (12photos) and for
a refund... their reply; No Refund, No way... then the bozos sent me
en email telling me they were "upgrading" their servers because of the
very problems I had... IMO nikonians is a "slick site" akin to a
"tourist trap"... I pefer "photobucket" to these ripoffs...

zenfolio looks like a very strong contender.)

Is this your home-brew photo gallery scheme?

http://dd-b.net/dd-b/SnapshotAlbum/data/

If so, please have your wife try my photo-sharing site. It's
chronologically oriented like yours, but probably simpler to use.

Here's an example of what a site within ourdoings.com looks like. The
latest is at the top, with a chronological archive at the bottom.

Basically I wrote my own home-brew photo gallery in such a way as to
make it open to others, and this year I want to turn it into a real
business.
