|
|
Greetings!
Is anyone successfully using a PCI-X raid controller card with the Sun
x4100?
Apparently, Sun does not certify any particular card. I have found one
that seems
to be compatible, MegaRAID SAS 8204XLP from LSI, but was wondering if
anyone
has used this or any other cards successfully on x4100s (running
Linux).
Cheers,

What does Sun certification have to do with using a card with Linux?

Apparently, there are two levels of compatibility in this regard: at
the OS
level, and at the electronics level, i.e., although the interface is
standard
(PCI-X), it doesn't necessarily follow that when you use a PCI-X RAID
controller card, the signal levels in the relevant paths from the card
all
the way to the internal hard drives would be sufficient for the card
to be
able to control the internal SAS drives (according to an LSI sales
engineer
I spoke with).
This could potentially be a problem only for using the raid controller
with
internal drives. If the raid controller is used with external hard
drives, it
wouldn't be a problem (according to the same engineer).
So, the question remains: has anyone successfully used a MegaRAID
SAS 8204XLP from LSI with a SunFire x4100 running Linux (or Solaris)?
Cheers,

*No* PCI-X raid controller card will work with the internal hard
drives unless you run your own cable from the card to the drives.
*Any* PCI-X raid card will with the internal hard drives if you do
run your own cable, as long as the OS supports the card.
