I'm planning to upgrade the memory in my HP xw9300 workstation and out of
curiosity decided to check the prices on HP's website (small business). To
my surprise, a 4GB (2x2GB) DDR-400 ECC kit (mfg # EA836AA) was almost $2000,
while a compatible kit from Crucial (p/n CT518062) is only is only $606!

Why such a difference? What is it about HP memory that makes it 3x more
expensive?

Just curious. Thanks, -Pat

It's just because HP knows that only morons buy HP stuff directly from
the HP website without comparing street prices. You are probably able to
find original HP memory much cheaper elsewhere than on the HP site.

The advantage of original HP memory is that it is covered by the system
warranty. 3rd party memory is not.

BTW: anyone interested in original HP 8GB memory kits (EK739AA, 2x4GB,
yes the rare *** expensive high density modules which are required
if you want to bring an xw9300 to 32GB) for xw9300? I have several of
them brand new. If someone is interested, my email address is valid (I'm
in Germany) ;-)

The HP sticker makes them expensive. That's about it.

HP and all the companies which once sold mainframes and minicomputers still have
the knuckleheaded mindset that people will buy their hardware at a premium
price, when perfectly compatible hardware is available elsewhere.

If you install non-HP memory in your system and then need to have warranty
service done, remove the non-HP memory before the service person arrives.

Thanks Benjamin and Ben for the replies.

Seems kind of pointless for HP to place such a rediculous mark-up on their
memory, since I imagine they sell very, very little of it that price.
Doesn't seem to make good business sense.

So am I correct in understanding that if I put non-HP memory in my
workstation I'll void the warranty? Is that right?

Well, in some way it does make sense. Of course manufacturers that also
have online shops usually ask prices close to MSRP. They ignore that
street prices are much lower. But on the other side for someone looking
at the manufacturer site the asking price of most shops look like a
bargain. And no matter if you buy from HP direct or from a cheaper
dealer, HP sells the same amount of memory ;-)

No. Original memory usually makes warranty/service easier, though. If
you experience problems HP probably will ask you to remove everything
non-HP from the machine and try again, if the problem still persists
they'll fix it. Only if it's obvious that the non-HP component caused
the problem or damaged the system they will refuse warranty repair.

If you have additional service contracts on the machine it's probably a
requirement that certain parts including memory are genuine HP parts,
though.

As a sometime reseller of computer parts and attachments to large corporations,
government agencies (indirectly), and service organizations, I've dealt a little
bit with the corporate purchasing mindset. These people make it easy on
themselves by looking up the manufacturers' own parts and simply ordering them.
They are incapable of doing any technical analysis, nor should they be, since
they are financial people not techno-geeks like us.

It makes perfectly good sense to demand an Intel D845PESV replacement
motherboard, for example, because any other replacement board, even another
Intel 845 chipset board, is likely to cause software driver problems once
installed.

But I find it absolutely ludicrous to demand only a Seagate ST38410A 8GB IDE
drive or a drive with an exact HPaq part number, when there are other reputable
brands with exactly the same capacity and maybe a larger capacity drive would
work just as well. Then you have HPaq, Dell and others using different part
numbers for the same functional part, either because the part goes into a
different model of computer or because the part was manufactured by different
OEMs. The Compaq floppy diskette drives with the oval-shaped eject button were
especially egregious examples of this practice, which continues.

And now you know how and why HPaq sells parts at such fabulous prices.
