|
Can anyone please let me know where the old X800 SE GPU stands
in the general scheme of things ? THG's VGA charts give
comparative benchmarks that include other versions of the X800
but not the SE. All I know is that it's an economy version of
the X800 core.
To put it another way : I have an X700 Pro in one of my
computers. How does the X800 SE compare with it ? |

The X800 SE has slightly higher fill rate, but almost twice the memory
bandwidth compared to the X700 Pro. This actually makes for an unbalanced
design, and consequently the X800SE is not much faster in today's games.

Thanks. So does that place the X800 SE on about the same level
as a GF 6600GT ? (I'm more familiar with nVidia GPUs than with
ATI's).
I ask because I often assemble or upgrade computers for people
with a strictly limited budget. For some of them, buying an
entry-level computer is a major family investment, but they
often have children who long for a reasonable gaming
capability. So I regularly scrounge around for used graphics
cards that are past their prime, but can still put out useable
frame rates with modern games at low settings. |

Look at this chart from THG. It's useful as a general guide.

Thanks for your interest. I have a slightly older version of
that page saved in my computer and as you said, it's very
useful as a general guide.
However, for making a decision based on careful consideration
of price/performance ratio (IOW, to get the best bang for the
buck for the kind of customers I mentioned earlier), there
are enough differences within the same tier level in the
chart that more detailed info is very desireable. |
