Hi,
Recently I picked up an HP PCI LAN adapter (B5509-660001) at a
PC Dump fair.
However, capacitor C56 (located between the boot PROM and the
MAC address PROM) has been ripped off and although the card seems
to be working properly I'd still like to put a new capacitor on
the card. Anyone having this card in his possession and willing to
lookup the capacitance and voltage of C56?

You would be 1000% better off simply getting another PCI Ethernet adapter. They
are selling for next to nothing on this side of the pond, with 90% of the new
motherboards being produced with Ethernet built in... Ben Myers

Maybe... |

But I got this card for next to nothing and there's a good chance I |
have a suitable capacitor laying around somewhere. Soldering a new
capacitor doesn't seem to be a problem, so why wouldn't I fix it?

It may have been removed as an after-manufacture change to fix a design
problem.
I'm quite certain there should be a capacitor. Mind that I said it was |
ripped off (i.e. there is damaged). I believe a capacitor as shown
here:
http://fujicon.manufacturer.globalsources.com/si/6008800591698/LargeImage/V-Chip-Aluminum/product_id-8819980726/action-GetProduct.htm
was originally fitted. At this time, what's left is the plastic socket
with 2 contact pins sticking out of it (I do not have a digital camera,
otherwise I would have shot a picture of it).

Use the card as-is, and if you are really concerned, compare its error
rate to another card.

It's your choice to repair or replace. I can assure you that very few cards
and motherboards are repaired any more. If it's broken or defective, it goes to
scrap. But if you want to take on the task and you have the right tools to
solder, feel free... Ben Myers
