I have a hp 500c printer. I was given a deskjet 656c hp printer with no
power box supply. Can I use the power supply box from the 500c for the 656c
printer?
Pat.

Both of these printers are technologically way over the hill. You are
better off with a Canon IP4300. As a matter of fact you could place all
of the models in a hat an draw one and you would be a head of the game.

You could place a plastic bag over your head, draw the string, and we

would be ahead of the game.

I can't say for sure without looking. I had lots of those old printers
and many were cross compatible in the power supply. The voltage and
polarity is printed on the printer right near the power inlet. A label
on the power supply shows what it is. You could verify with a meter,
but then you wouldn't be asking these questions anyway if you had a
meter. The other thing is the input jack. I presume that it is
similar. That alone doesn't say anything regarding voltage. If the
voltage is not correct, don't try it. If the wattage is slightly
different, that won't hurt you in most cases.

Unless he has accounts with both Prodigy and Road Runner, that's unlikely.

No, the 500C used an AC output module (20VAC), the Deskjet 656c needs 24V
DC.

The module you need is available on http://partsurfer.hp.com but you can
probably find it cheaper in a thrift store (perhaps with another printer
attached.... The information from partsurfer is shown following (in $US).

0950-3490 $39.10 Power supply module (Yokogawa AT7001A) - 100-240VAC
input, 50/60Hz, 400mA - 24VDC output, 500mA - Requires separate AC power
cord
