Can someone point me to the correct news group to post this problem, please?

My friend has an ASUS P4S80DX motherboard. The person who built the machine
installed an unauthorized version of Windows Media Center.

We have since installed Windows XP Pro SP2.

It does not have drivers for the sound. In the device manager I am able to
get this information (device instance ID):

PCI\VEN_1039&DEV_7012&SUBSYS_810D1043&REV_A0\3&267A616A&0&17

A long search of the web lead me to a driver named SiS 7012.

Attempting to install this driver gives me the following errors:
UpdateDriverForPlugAndPlayDevices
-536870397

when I click OK through this message I get:

Sis 7012 PCI Audio Driver Setup - InstallShield Wizard
Fail to install audio driver for Windows XP.
Setup will Exit.

Any ideas?
Thank you.

Hi Don,
The only disk we could find with drivers had no drivers for WinXP or WinXP
Pro. So that leaves us with trying to find the correct drivers somewhere
online.

P4S800D-X = Soundmax AD1888
http://www.asus.com.tw/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=12&l3=45&l4=0&model=407&modelmenu=1

This would be the officially listed download, from the download listing.

http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/audio/ad1888/WDM_3665.zip

smwdmSIS.inf has:

%*WDM_AC97AUD.DeviceDesc%=WDM_ODMA188, pci\ven_1039&dev_7012&subsys_810D1043

But there also appears to be something with a later revision number.

ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/misc/audio/ad1888/AD1888_5410_WHQL.zip

and it also has the same line in the smwdmSIS.inf file, in SMAXWDM folder.

%*WDM_AC97AUD.DeviceDesc%=WDM_A188, pci\ven_1039&dev_7012&subsys_810D1043

The 5410 file is a 23MB download or so.

HTH,
Paul

why not just go to the Asus web site and download the drivers for the
system board?
