I need sata drivers to install XP. I don't have a floppy. How do I install
XP without drivers or a floppy? What if I installed an eide drive, and tried
to clone it to my sata. XP still wouldn't see my sata to do a repair. How
did everyone install XP before Vista arrived?

First time I took a floppy drive from another computer attached it to
the motherboard, leaving the side of the case open. Certain you can
also use the dos format utility from the disk drive manufacture, it
will see the drive and allow you to format as a boot or slave drive.

I have used the Techie'z Toolkit - Version 2, A Linux cd several times
for the format instead of using a floppy drive.

If you have bittorrent software do a search for "Techie'z Toolkit -
Version 2" should be easy to locate. I have not downloaded version 3
to know what that included...

Techie'z Toolkit - Version 2 is a must for everyone computer utilities
to fix computers.

I'm confused - presumably he will be loading XP from a dvd which means he
has a reader in the computer (model?, make?). Unless the computer is very
old he should be able to boot from the dvd and unless the SATA drive is a
late add-on the install should go without a problem. I have loaded XP (&
linux) from the dvd drive directly to the SATA drive without a problem (no
special requirement for the drive type).

Can't he just set the BIOS to boot from the XP disk and do a normal load?

Yes, he can set the bios and install if his motherboard or bios is
capable. My last few builds using an ECS geforce6100sm-m motherboard
Windows XP will not find the sata drive. I had to use an alternative
method to install windows. I presume other motherboards exist with the
same oddity.

A New drive not formatted, and can not be seen by windows, I have that
happen on several occasion in the past, you can start the load from a
CD rom, but windows can not see a drive to continue. Use the
manufactures utility to format, as a boot or slave and the windows
install will take place.

Or he has installed Linux, added grub, and then windows cannot see the
drive to format. I have had that on several windows install with the
well-priced ESC GeForce6100SM-M motherboard & 65 watt AMD CPU combos
recently from my local Frys Electronic store. I have had good luck
using this low cost motherboard, but was surprised the first time I
tried to load windows, with this motherboard.

About a month ago, I also replaced a SATA drive in a generic system with Intel
mobo and Intel 915 chipset and did not need any separate drivers... Ben Myers

The "oddity" is that early motherboards with SATA drive connectors made the SATA
drives look just different enough from PATA that drivers are required. I also
think that Microsoft slipstreamed any drivers required for major chipsets into
SP2.

I have done a couple of installs of XP SP2 onto Dells with SATA drives and had
nary a problem. I did not have enough time to see if XP SP1 and the original
XP betaware were OK with SATA... Ben Myers
