I just installed Spiderman 3 PC game. The screen is mostly all black with
grey blotches during play. I have high end computer with X850 Pro 256MB
video card and Catalyst 7.4 drivers. I looked at system requirements and
X1300/7300 256MB or better were minimum supported video card. Even though
the X850 is slightly older, it is a much higher performing card.

What gives? A two year old card not supported for a main stream game?

I just found out Shader Model 3.0 is required for this game so only ~20% of

all gamers can play. Is that the biggest mistake ever made in the history of
PC gaming or what? Spiderman should be a mainstream game.

Don't think it's a bigger mistake than Ubisoft doing it for multiple games.

This is the first I have ever heard of SM 3.0 only games. What other games
can only be played on a SM 3.0 card?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Splinter_Cell_4
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Clancy%27s_Rainbow_Six:_Vegas

are the two that immediately spring to mind.

Ive heard of this but I also heard of games running either 1.1 shader and
2.0 then there is 3.0 the latest . Must be there way of helping ati sell
more product.

To be fair, nVidia had SM 3.0-capable cards a long time before ATi did. The
primary market for Spiderman 3 is XBox 360, so for Ubisoft, limiting the PC
version to SM 3.0 may maximize code commonality and save development costs.
It's not the first time a PC game had to be compromised in favor of its
console version...
