|

I have an MSI 845 Ultra Pentium 4 mainboard. While the board only supports
266 memory,
I bought and installed some Kingston 333, thinking that it would clock down
and I could use it
in a later system that DID support 333. I then bought (2) 256 sticks of 266
Kingston memory.
When I installed that, all hell broke lose. I had to take the video card
out, and change it, but finally
I have it working with the 333 memory. My question is: If the memory clocks
down to 266, why wouldn't
it "play nice" with other Kingston 266. (maybe the actual chips on the
memory?) And also, I run some memory
intensive apps, but the system seems to run out of memory much quicker than
I would like. (even using rambooster)
Is it possible the timing of the 333 memory or the memory itself may not be
running correctly at all? Should I install
some 266 memory and use this 333 in a system that actually supports it?
Thanks in advance.... |

Unsure of that Motherboard but it's not the RAM that clocks down, its the MB
that does it, depending on how you set it up. I have had issues with mixing
the RAM speeds. I believe the reason is setting the RAM timings by AUTO or
SPD.
What exactly is the FSB BUS speed & RAM speeds? Try synchronizing them.
If
they are sync'd at 333, try to clock the RAM at 266. The speed is only
supposed to be what the RAM is rated for. The 333 RAM should be fat-n-happy
at 266. The 266 RAM might not be able to hit 333. Make sense? |

Sorry for the lack of clarification.....the mb ONLY supports 266. Wouldn't
the board automatically clock
the ram down, considering it cannot be set to 333? I will check the bios and
get back, but what you said
is pretty much what I thought. Though I thought this would be
automatic...thanks! |

It sounds like the 266MHz and the 333MHz RAM sticks have different timing
requirements. It's always best, for stability reasons, to use identical
memory sticks.

Ok, great. But when you say identical, do you mean brand and model as well?
Meaning: Could I use
266 corsair and then 366 kingston....I ask because I would like to order
some online....
Thanks |

The bios settings also effect CAS latency, for example. If your new memory
is CL3 and the old is CL2, for example, it needs to all run at CL3.
Sometimes switching the order of the DIMMs will help in that case, or
manually setting to CL3 rather than "by SPD".

Keep trying to get these to work together before buying more. I mean, the
furture will require totally different RAM most likely & unless your ready
to upgrade to something that will last a while, dont blow money on something
that you cant use on the next upgrade.
Someone else said switch slots, set RAM to CL3 in the BIOS, or possibly on
some boards, set it to "normal" or "maximum computability". You should be
able to get these to work with the right settings. |
