I'm posting this as much to get something going as anything.
You may recall a couple months ago when I got an Athlon 2500+ (Barton core)
and it wouldn't boot. Some of you suggested it might be a power supply
problem but I returned the chip anyway. Today I installed an Athlon 2200+
(T-bred core) and it works fine. I don't think there's a significant
difference in power consumption between the two so I guess my power supply
is OK. I'm also running a Radeon 9700 Pro which draws about 54 watts.
No apparent ill effects so far from the bulging, leaky caps. I think I will
just run with them until I have a problem. This is my 2nd PC and only runs
3-4 days a week typically only for a few hours. CPU temp is running 4-5 deg
C higher than the Duron 1200 but still under 40C in my relatively cool
basement. |

FWIW: You should replace the caps if you want a stable, reliable board.
Otherwise, good luck mate :)

I may eventually spring for a refurb'd board from the Epox store. They have
had all the caps replaced.

If you are running a 9700 a real power hog at the time,a Barton 2500 or 2600
(I had a 3200barton) wont make any difference if it boots with a Duron,my
8RDA+ ran them fine.
if the caps are budging it will.
And if it was a 333 fsb board or a 400 board that will make the difference
the 333's wont run the bartons at the higher FSB speeds not all 8RDA+ boards
were capable of running the 200 mgz(400) bartons.
It had to do with the revision of the board and the bios if it was the
latest.
I am not very experienced with a solder iron but I replaced mine with ones
form a couple of other boards that were bad but the caps looked good they
had the same values tho.
Bought them on e-bay for around $15. shipped.
A solder sucker from radio shack(found an ear wax remover bulb was about the
same thing) and some patience was all it took,if I could do it any one
could.
The board is still running great(sold it to a friend a year later),I
upgraded and regretted going to socket 754 from that board.
I put a decent 450 watt power supply the system and never had a problem.
It is still hard to beat the N-Force audio from that board.

Yes, it was a 333FSB chip. I have the Feb 2004 BIOS which is the 2nd most |
recent. Doesn't really matter at this point, for what I do, I won't notice
the difference between 2200 and 2500. Truth be told, the Duron was probably
good enough but for $30, it was worth it to me.
I've done a lot of soldering but my time is worth more than the $30 it will
cost to get a re-furb from Epox should I need it. I'll keep plugging along
until it fails completely.
Thanks for the info. |
