Hey guys - I have an Ultra 10 machine here running Solaris 7. Every time I
power up the machine, the CD tray opens right away (before the OS boots)
and stays open until I close it. Can anyone think of what might cause
that? Perhaps some simple setting I need to change?

thanks!

I think it's hinting that it wants to be upgraded! :-)

Hah. Well, it does this even if auto-boot? is set to false, so I don't
think I can blame the OS age for this one. :)

Is the drive usable? Sounds like it from your description.

I've seen several of that vintage do the same thing, but they were all
dead. Perhaps yours is on its way.

I've got a v880 that kept rejecting DVDs.
I disconnected/reconnected the SCSI connector a few times and it
started working again.
Might be worth a try.

Yeah, it seems to work just fine. I booted and installed Solaris from it
without a hitch, and I can certainly still mount a CD when I put it in.

Just a note in case I've confused anyone - it does not reject anything I
put in it, and it'll open up at power on without even a CD in it.

I wasnt confused. I have experienced weird CD/DVDROM behaviour myself.
I have one that refuses to close 99 out of 100 times after power up.
I mean if I cose it 100 times it might stay that way once.
There is nothing physically wrong with it that is visible.
On another box an NVRAM had a dead battery and made the CDROM go
crazy.
Neither were Ultra 10's though.

Hmmm. Perhaps I should check out the battery.

Not having an Ultra 10 I have to guess you might find that a bit
difficult
if its inside the NVRAM. Anyway if the battery is dead you wont get a
hostid or MAC number other than all 0's. Somewhat of a clue.
A used CD/DVD for an Ultra might be cheaper
than a new NVRAM too. A whole box eBay'd might be.

You probably don't need a CD/DVD "for an Ultra". Just about any random
IDE CD/DVD drive should work. Or you could just learn to live with the
peculiar habits of the drive you have. If it still works otherwise. . . .

My Ultra 10 exhibited similar behaviour after swapping the original CD
Drive for a faster model. I lived with it for a few months before I
tried swapping the drive again, which made the problem go away. Doesn't
really answer the why, tho.

Hope that helps.

FYI - I finally got back to this, and swapping a different drive in
did the trick.

thanks
