Hi, I know this may have come up before...but what is the quietest/best
cooling AMD heatsink/fan combo?
I have a Zalman flower one, and am a little dissapointed as it is still
kinda loud for my taste-What Socket A AMD heatsink would you recommend, and
what do the professional companies use that is so silent? |

The Thermaltake Silent Boost for Socket A comes with a nearly silent 80mm
fan, very likely a Panaflo. Thermalright has the SLK900U to which a 92mm fan
may be mounted. |

By Zalman 'flower' do you mean the 6000/6500 models or the newer 7000A? |
The 7000 throttled back to <1500 rpm is inaudible at 1 metre. IIRC this
unit is still rated as the most effective quiet standard (air cooled)
hsf on the SPCR forum.

It's a PanaFlo 170mA FBL08A12M that runs at 2500 RPM and is anything but
silent. Thermaltake *claims* a 21 dBA noise level for the cooler (and
it might be at the 'right' distance ). But according to specs I've
seen elsewhere the fan _by itself_ is 33 dBA which might put the cooler
at around 45 dBA. That is if you get a good fan - mine was so out of
balance and made so much noise I had to replace it. I put on a 1500 RPM
Papst fan (an extra $20) that supposedly has 12 dBA of noise, so maybe
now the total noise is what I thought I was getting to start with, 21
dBA. The copper heat sink is very good though, it sure keeps the temp
down compared to the 60mm fan and small heat sink I had before.
Of course once you replace the noisiest part in your system you
immediately notice the next noisiest part which for me was a ball
bearing hard drive. I fixed that by putting it in a mobile rack and
keeping it out most of the time since it's used for backup only and now
I notice the PSU fan is rather loud. Can't win.
