I put together a PC for an Xmas gift for a friend but they got the OS (WXP)
software for it so before I hand the PC over to them I was wondering if
there is a freeware PC test utility that will run in DOS?
I used the IBM disk test utility so I know at least the floppy and hard
drives seem OK, but I want to run the CPU and see how hot things get and
maybe test the sound card to see if the front audio plugs work.

Do everyone a favor and get their OS disk from them and install it. You
just KNOW that if the install (including drivers etc) doesn't go smoothly
they will be calling you Christmas morning to come fix it anyway.
