I've installed Win98SE, and I can't find the Ports section to check for
available COM Port and IRQ under Win98/SE in order to install the modem.
Thanks, Newbie in Mich.

Look in your CMOS. See if you have two serial ports. If you do, turn off the
second port. I don't remember that much about Win98SE, but I think it will
detect your modem. This must be a fairly old modem if you have to set
jumpers. If it isn't old, it should be sufficient just to plug it in and run
the installation program. I think your COM and IRQ information is found
under Control Panel>System. If I remember correctly, the System function has
a number of tabs, one of which should tell you about your IRQs. On every
system I've ever seen, COM1 has IRQ 4 and COM2 has IRQ 3. This has been
standard for a long, long time.

I've discovered that I can't use the BestData modem after all, because
it requires a 16-bit ISA slot which I don't have on my Epox board. I do
have PCI slots which I can use with a different modem. Live and learn!
Thanks, Ted in Mich.
