I am planning to upgrade a Sony Vaio PCV-120
from 95b to 98. It's a P-200mhz 96mb-RAM(orig 32mb),
3.8gb-hdd.
Should I partition the hd first?
install 98 on one partition, keep 95a on the other?
is partition magic good as I dont want to lose files.
are there real advantages of 98 over 95b?
95a stunk as it used FAT16, there was too much wasted space
because of the cluster size.
What does 98 have that 95b doesnt?
should I install win2000 instead?

Get a 40B GB (approx $40 new) and go with Win 98 SE (Second Edition) until
you're ready for a system that will support XP.
Do a clean install of SE. Slave your puny drive to get your data off it and
use it to backup your files.
Completely DUMP Win95.

Just install over your old win95. Wiping the disk completely clean and
starting from scratch would be better but remember you cannot normally
backup/restore applications in this situation, only your data so don't do it
unless you have all your software CDs AND ACTIVATION codes. With only 3.8GB
I wouldn't want to waste the space on a second copy of Windows on another
partition. Partition Magic IS good but this kind of tool ALWAYS carries
some risk so don't do it until you have a backup of your most important
stuff.

Not too much. The main thing that comes to mind is that 98SE was the first
Windows OS to have reasonably good USB support. The dialup networking was
also somewhat less broken than in Win95 but otherwise they are pretty
similar.

IMHO the odds of getting Win2k working properly with a laptop that old are
pretty slim. It'll install fine but you'll need drivers for the sound,
video, modem etc and it'll be dog slow.

What do think the odds are of a laptop that old actually supporting a 40GB
hard drive? Maybe 1 in 100?

I'd copy any files you need to save before you do anything.

Depends on the support from sony. My old thinkpad (pent 133) works great
with win95b but the drivers from IBM were rather flakey for 98SE, things
that worked fine in 95b didn't in 98SE like suspend and hibernation. Unless
you are haveing problems with win95b, why "upgrade"?
| Quote: | What does 98 have that 95b doesnt?

The only thing I noticed on my thinkpads was better support for IR file
transfers (which is painfully slow but fun to play with..). Mine has no USB
ports but if they did, 98 is needed for that. 98SE is a better OS but only
if the driver set for your laptop works well with 98SE as well. Given it
was probably designed for 95, it may or may not play well with 98SE?

-NO-, it would be painfully slow.

I wouldn't bother if I was you unless it's 98SE. It's far more stable than
98FE. And I'd check out Sony's web site first to make sure there are drivers
available for that model for 98, otherwise I'd say leave it as it is,
although 95a sucked too compared with 95b.

A 40GB drive wouldn't work on a Socket 7 system, you would need to get an
ATA adapter card.
I would back up all my stuff and format the HDD, then use the bootable win
98 CD to install it, then restore all my backed up stuff.

"Easy Drive" by Western Digital will allow older Bios's to install large
hard drives to older systems.... It will do the work for you too,
install new disk, boot up Easy Drive(install), will partition it, format
and get you running. I believe it will work only on WD drives but most of
the other company's have similiar software.
If you've been happy so far with the HDD space you've had and just have
recently outgrown it, go on ebay and get a 10 gig drive for 10 bucks, and
then when you upgrade, THEN worry about the large HDD's. Don't invest
anymore then you have to into that system is my advice.

You probably already know this but just for the anyone else who may be
reading:
1. Easy Drive and similar tools (such as EZ Bios) don't actually do
ANYTHING to the systems BIOS. What they do is to update the drives' boot
sector with what amounts to fake addressing info.
2. This doesn't always work, especially with drives that are MUCH larger
than what the BIOS was written to deal with. At a minimum the OP would have
to use the drives' "32GB limit jumper" if his drive has such a thing.
Without it his system probably won't boot at all, not even far enough to
install Easy Drive.
3. Using this sort of tool sets you up for serious problems later. If you
later boot from a bootable CD or floppy without following any special
instructions that came with Easy Drive you can easily corrupt your file
system and not always in a way that you are likely to notice at first.
In short, take the disk that came with a new drive and throw it away unless
you have no other option AND have good backups.

Very high. You can get a 386 to support 120GB. OK admittedly you have |
to use a workaround such as drive overlay software but it can be done.

1) WRONG, they interrupt all calls to the Int13h address. |

In any event the hack is being stored to and loaded from the hard drive. If
the system can't/doesn't read the drive the hack never goes into affect.
Your BIOS is not modified. You can verify this, just take a drive with
overlay software installed and wipe it with your favorite utility (dd in
Linux, maybe Zap for dos/win) and the drive overlay trick is gone.

Which IMO, there is no reason for a system not to see a large HDD,
even as a small one to boot into overlay software. |
