Hi - my system refuses to run unless I disable level 1 & 2 cache in the BIOS
I have an ECS P4VMM2 and P4 1.7 Ghz

The system fails straight after POST unless I disable the cache and then it
seems it behave itself, albeit extremely slowly. I think its a CPU related
issue but would be glad of a second opinion before I shell out some hard
earned shekels.

Thanks in advance

Did you set the memory timings yourself or is it on AUTO?

Is it overclocked? if not, it sounds like the cache RAM is bad :(

Which is on the CPU for a P4, which means the CPU might be bad. He needs to
run memtes86 or similar. Tests memory with cache on and off. I have seen
bad main memory make cache look bad before. If the cache is bad, the CPU is
bad.
