Hi, All.
I have a Dell Dimension E521 with a Conexant D850 56K V.9x DFVc modem.
The system is Windows XP SP2 with all the current patches applied from
Windows Update. The driver is from Dell, and says it's a Conexant
driver version 7.33.0.0 dated 10/5/2005. I've not found a more recent
driver anywhere.
I am running a program that tries to dial out every 15 minutes. It
works fine most of the time. However, if the line is in use (eg, a
voice call or a data call from a different computer), the application
times out and waits for the next 15 minute update. However, in the
Networking Connections window, the status of the modem connection is
"Connecting" or "Disconnecting" and it hangs in that state forever.
Rebooting solves the problem. Restarting the application does not.
Subsequent 15 minute updates never connect apparently due to the
connection hanging.
I don't know if other conditions cause this symptom (such as the phone
service being down, the called number busy, an inbound call in
progress, etc). The problem is consistent -- if the line is in use,
the dialer (or whatever) hang condition occurs 100% of the time.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Mike |

What dialer program? It sounds like a problem with how the program |
interacts with DUN, not a modem problem.

Hi, Gary,
I agree it's not likely a modem problem. I presume it's the Windows XP
DUN program. The application is WeatherLink 5.7, and it is configured
to use a dial-up connection configured in the Windows XP networking
properties. I cannot figure out how to determine what errors were
generated and what is hanging.

I'd try to simulate the problem using a comms app such as
HyperTerminal. If the modem misbehaves, eg if it doesn't respond with
a message like NO DIALTONE when the line is in use, then that would
eliminate both DUN and WeatherLink. I'd also check your modemlog.
One other thing you could try is to disconnect the modem from the
phone line. This would remove power from the modem's silicon DAA, if
it has one.
