Hi All --
I'm trying to pick a motherboard for building an Athlon 64x2 system,
and I'm currently hovering between the MSI K9N Platinum and Gigabyte
GA-M57. While the MSI board seems to score generally better and has a
few nice extras (like the second GbE port), I've heard numerous
reports on MCP overheating due to relatively small heatsink. The
latter does not seem to be much smaller than that on the other board,
so I'm wondering if I should be really concerned with that, especially
that I'm not going to seriously overclock the board (if at all). How
hot does the MCP heatsink get at stock voltages/frequencies?
I'm also wondering about the temperature of the VRM heatsink, since it
is close to a bunch of capacitors which definitely don't like being
heated up. How hot is that heatsink, and do you think that the heat
radiation would be serious enough to contribute to premature failure
of those caps?
Any comments will be greatly appreciated...
Best regards, Tomasz

I can recommend you the MSI K9N Platinum. I tried 4(!!) pieces of Asus
M2N-E. They all died after a few days or a few weeks. The MSI performs great
and there is no sign of overheating. |

Thanks for the information.
I got a K9N Platinum SLI and started it up yesterday, and the heatsink
gets indeed hot after a few minutes. As long as it does not affect
stability, it's probably OK, although having a piece of hot aluminum
inside the PC is not the most comforting feeling for me. I haven't
done much testing yet, and will not have time to do that soon, but I
will revisit the issue in a few weeks and will see how hot it gets in
normal use. I may swap it out for an old Zalman NB47J from my PC
junkyard, as the board seems to have matching mounting holes.
Best regards, Tomasz
