Hi.

I use AT&T dialup to log into my I.E. browser.

For the past 8 days, my connection to the internet will discontinue after
2-3 hours.

AT&T (my provider) check my settings and claim everything is ok and suggest
I need a new modem.

I use windows XP home edition. My modem is Conexant Soft56k Modem Driver.

The driver date is 3/6/2002 version is 5.3.3.0.

Question:

1.. Is there anything else I can check/or do on my PC.
2.. If I have to purchase a new modem, should I get the same version and
date or an update version.
3.. Where is the best place to purchase this version online.

Thanks.

Tom.

You can go look at the modem activity log for the
events before/during/after the last termination.

control panel>phone and modem options>modems>
"select the modem">properties>diagnostics>view log

It may not be your modem. It could be a change in line conditions or

a device you recently hooked up to your phone line. Have you noted if
your voice calls are more noisy? Have you just hooked anything up?
Try disconnecting all the devices (phones, answering machines, fax
machines, etc.) from the line and see if the problem continues. If it
doesn't, reconnect the devices one by one and see if you can narrow it
down. I've seen cheap phones go bad and affect modem communication on
the line they are hooked up to.

Another poster said to check your modem log. This is a good idea and
I suggest you post a copy of the log here.

1. timeout may be set in Windows / IE
2. ISP timeout e.g. 10 hours for MSN
3. call waiting interference

AOL is the only ISP that i've tried that will keep you connected for days.
but it uses P3, and needs a special dialer.

if there is an inactivity timeout, you can sometimes use a "pinger" to fool
the service or ISP.
