I just recently formatted my GT5228 after running into some irremediable problems involving some corrupted files, and I had to reinstall Windows XP from the installation CD.

Everything went went just fine reinstalling all of the windows updates and drivers, except that I realized that there was no sound. I thought this was weird considering that before the format, there was sound and it was working perfectly.

I looked at the control panel to see if I had to manually select and reactivate the audio device, but there was no sound playback device to select from. I looked in the Hardware tab to see if I was missing the drivers. It listed the Legacy Sound Drivers and Audio Codecs as being enabled.

I finally looked through my System Information to find out I did not even have a Sound Device listed. What's strange because I supposedly have the files needed to make it work, but it is like that the device that was there and working before the format doesn't even exist anymore.

I really need some help on this, I don't want to have to buy a sound card because a simple format "killed" the previous one.

Thank you.

This happens all the time, and is an easy fix (insofar as PCs are easy to fix...)

Your Gateway PC came with a set of restore /recovery disks. You can use these, or you can hit the Gateway support website (have your order or customer number handy) to get the latest downloads for your PC. I think you need to run a full update on your system and your OS.

FWIW, drivers typically come bundled for the motherboard, on-board audio, and video. If you delete one set you probably deleted all of them (I have done this myself, and it is no big deal to fix it).

I am a satisfied former Gateway customer (I build my own now), but at one time I was on a first-name basis with the support staff in Newberry, SC. If you need more help, post here or call them!
