Have WXP and a CD-RW and DVD drive. My new MB Chaintech 7NJL3 has on board
audio. There are no small audio cables supplied with the MB and the old
cables have a different plug.
Do I really need to connect the audio cables or are they no longer used?

The IDE cable provides the sound connection.

Essentially no, XP can play audio over the IDE cable, but that uses up
system resources, so I receommencd getting that cable (should be
fairly cheap), and playing CDs with the analog audio.

Thanks. I went to CompUSA (the only PC store around open during the week
when I am not working) and the only cable they had was with multi plugs on
one end and they want $25!.
For two cables that's more than what I paid for a CD-RW and DVD(used) drive.
I think I will try to get to another PC store or an electronics store and
make my own ends.

You need the audio cable if you want to use the headphone jack on the front
of the drive.

I went to my local Mom and Pop store (that I frequent, and bought the
bulk of my system from), asked for a few (for my front panel project),
and they GAVE them to me (being a regular customer, also gave me a
bunch of RJ45 ends, and long ago, a bunch of "vintage" PC parts). A
surplus type computer store had one for $2.50.

Not for that. You simply de-select digital audio in the drive
properties. You will get no audio out your speakers though, just the
headphone jack.

As many people have discovered, simply de-selecting the digital audio in
drive properties will not re-enable the headphone jack on the CD drive. You
must also disable the digital audio in Windows Media Player.
