I have 2 hard drives and they share the same EIDE cable.
Is it absolutely necessary for the 2 drives to be on the same EIDE
cable? |

Definitely not. But most computers have only two IDE connectors. One is
usually used for hard drives and the other for CD-ROM drives, DVD-ROM drives and
the like. And you have to make sure the drive jumpers are set to match either
the role of the drive (master-slave) on that IDE cable (channel) or are set to
cable-select with the right cable... Ben Myers

NO! you will also find a small 'speed' improvement by putting one HDD on One IDE cable and the other HDD on a seperate cable.
It is normal to put your CD/DVD drive on the second cable, so you do not get slow down when copying files from CD to HDD - which could happen if both shared the same cable..
Adding the second HDD with the CD/DVD drive would only 'slow' you down if now copying files from the CD/DVD drive to the second HDD on the same cable...
Just try to copy 'from cable to cable' for best results.
Hope that was helpful _________________ Gateway MX3311b (W340UA)
