Helping specify a new computer, clone computer vendor offers LiteOn, LG,
or ASUS. I don't know the models, just current 16X DL burners without
Lightscribe.
Of these three brands, is there any preference as far as reliability,
compatibility, support esp. firmware/software updates, and quality of any
included burning software?

Don't know about LG, but I have had LiteOn and Asus. Had no problems |
with either. |

Asus doesn't make burners, so that will be a re-badged drive from
who-knows-where.
LG has better initial quality (fewer lemons), and tends to produce higher
burn quality across a wider range of media types.
Included software is up to the PC maker.

I have both LG and Lite-On burners. Both have the same feature set, and
both had roughly the same price. Of the 2, I use the LG more often.
